Take a moment to slow down and discover the beauty of Chinese calligraphy. This hands-on activity offers a relaxing introduction to one of China's most treasured artistic traditions, where brushstrokes, characters and centuries of history come together.

Led by experienced tutors from the Confucius Institute at the University of Southampton, the session will introduce you to traditional calligraphy tools, including the brush, ink and paper. You will learn how simple strokes can be combined to create elegant Chinese characters.

During the activity, you will have the opportunity to:

Learn basic Chinese calligraphy techniques and practise different brushstrokes.
Explore the relationship between Chinese characters, their forms and meanings.
Experience the focus and calm that can come from the flow and rhythm of brushwork.
Create your own personalised piece of Chinese calligraphy to take home.

No previous experience is needed. Whether you are picking up a calligraphy brush for the first time or simply looking to try something creative and different, everyone is welcome.
