Singing is an inherently embodied activity. When we sing, we actively use our lungs, our diaphragm, our larynx, our pharynx, our vocal cords, our mouth, our nasal cavity, our lips, our tongue, our abdominal muscles, and even our teeth. Singing also involves our brains and our auditory system. In this performance, we expand the expressive capabilities of the voice by also incorporating the arms, hands, fingertips, legs, and indeed the whole body, whose movements command electronic sounds and electronic transformations of the voice in real-time. The voice as an instrument is therefore extended both via electronic manipulation and extension of the parts of the body involved in singing. The whole body of the performer becomes a giant vocal apparatus, a hybrid instrument capable of producing human and electronic utterances.
The performance will also include a talk about the sensors and an opportunity for you to try the technology yourself!
