Avenue Campus is a 5-minute ride from the main Highfield Campus via Lovers Walk or Highfield Road.

A self-service bike station with air pump and a few tools is available on the side of Building 177, facing Burgess Road (next to the Science and Engineering Day banner) at Boldrewood Innovation Campus.

For full information on walking and cycling to campus, including walking maps and bicycle store locations, please see the University of Southampton's Active travel page.

By e-scooter

Voi shared e-scooters are another great, carbon-neutral way to travel around the city, in particular between Avenue Campus, Highfield, Portswood and the city centre, with many of Voi's bespoke parking bays nearby.

How to start:

  • Download the Voi app onto your iPhone or Android device to start travelling around the city on two wheels.
  • Riders need to have a provisional or full driving licence and be at least 18 years of age to hire an e-scooter.
  • Find an available Voi e-scooter and unlock it using your Voi app.
  • Riders are always encouraged to wear helmets.
  • Learn how to ride safely in just 15 mins by enrolling in 'RideLikeVoila', Voi's online e-scooter traffic school. You will win £5 of free rides when you have completed it
  • If you are new to e-scooters, you can switch to Beginner's mode on the app to keep the speed slow.
  • Southampton and Voi operate a Mandatory Parking Zone system which means that you need to park the e-scooter in a specific parking area to complete your ride. These are all easy to find on Voi's app and there will be some extra parking spots on the day as well to encourage sustainable transport to the event.

For more details on how to Voi see: voiscooters.com/faq.

By Bus

Some of the Unilink and Bluestar buses can take you from Southampton City Centre to Avenue Campus in only 15-20 minutes.

The Unilink U2B and U2 buses travel from Southampton City Centre (Central Station, Cenotaph stops) directly to Avenue Campus in approximately 15 minutes. They also go to the University main Highfield campus a few stops after Avenue, where U1A and U6H also stop. To get from Highfield Interchange to Avenue Campus you can walk directly or take the U2C service, which stops at Avenue Subway, a 3-minute walk from Avenue Campus - see map below.

All Unilink tickets are £2.50 single/£4.00 all-day pass for adults and £1.70 single/£3.00 all-day pass for children (free for under 2 years old) and are also valid on Bluestar buses.

The Bluestar 1 bus goes from Winchester to Southampton city centre (via Otterbourne and Chandlers Ford), and stops at Avenue Subway. The Bluestar 2 bus goes from Fair Oak to the city centre (via Eastleigh) and stops at Portswood Broadway, about a 15-minute walk from Avenue Campus.

The Bluestar 4 bus goes from Romsey to Southampton Central Station via Shirley, Lordshill, Nursling, Rownhams and North Baddesley. The Bluestar 6 bus goes from Lymington to Southampton Central Station via Brockenhurst, Lyndhurst, Ashurst, Totton and Millbrook. From Southampton Central Station you can catch the Unilink U2B or the U2, which will take you to Avenue Campus in approximately 15 minutes.

The Bluestar 7 (from Lordshill to Sholing) and the Bluestar 17 (from Weston to Adanac Park) also stop at Southampton Central Station.

You can find more information on bus times, ticket fares and city maps on the Unilink website, Bluestar website or via the Unilink App (to buy tickets on the go, check maps and see your bus's live locations).

By Train

There are two train stations in Southampton, both convenient to the University. Coming from London, the first station is Southampton Airport Parkway (Eastleigh), located directly opposite Southampton Airport. This station is slightly closer to the University's Highfield Interchange.

Fast trains from London and Bournemouth/Weymouth stop at Southampton Central as well as Southampton Airport Parkway (Eastleigh). Trains from Portsmouth and Bristol/South Wales stop at Southampton Central. There are also regular trains from major airports such as Gatwick and Heathrow to Southampton Central. You can find details of routes and timetables on the National Rail website or on the Trainline website.

From Southampton Airport Parkway (Eastleigh): the journey takes about 30 minutes using the Unilink U1C to Highfield Interchange, followed either by U2C from there or a short walk.

Taxis are also usually available on the east side of the station, towards Wide Ln. From Southampton Airport Parkway, the ride is about 10 minutes long and costs approximately £10-12, depending on the company.

From Southampton Central station: Use the south side (platform 4) and exit for the Unilink U2B or U2 bus service which will take you directly to Avenue Campus in approximately 15 minutes.

Taxis are also usually available on both sides of the station. From Southampton Central, the ride is about 10 minutes long and costs approximately £6-8, depending on the company and travel time.

Alternatively, St Deny's Station is a 25-minute walk from Avenue campus.

By Coach

A more affordable and rather convenient option to reach the University of Southampton from London is the coach service provided by National Express. Timetables and reservations are available online at www.nationalexpress.com.

Some coaches arrive (and depart) at the University of Southampton Coach Station on Burgess Road, a 5 minutes' walk away from Highfield Campus, from where you can get to Avenue Subway (3 minutes' walk from Avenue Campus) in 6 minutes on the Unilink U2C, or in 15 minutes if you choose to walk.

To obtain information and book tickets on those coaches, please make sure to enter 'Southampton University' in the 'To' field on the National Express website. There are also coaches that go to the centre of Southampton but only stop at Southampton Coach Station. These are less convenient, as you will then need to take a bus or taxi to the Highfield Campus.

From Southampton Coach Station you will need to walk for approximately 6 minutes to Southampton Central Station, from where you can take the Unilink U2B or U2 directly to Avenue Campus. Alternatively, you can walk for 3 minutes to the ASDA & Marlands stop (Portland Terrace), to take the Unilink U1A/U1E, or U6H to Highfield Campus, from where you can get to Avenue Subway (3 minutes' walk from Avenue Campus) in 6 minutes on the Unilink U2C, or in 15 minutes if you choose to walk.
