About #UoSDHM

UK Disability History Month (UKDHM) was first launched in 2010. It is now an annual event creating a platform to focus on the history of people with disabilities who struggle for equality and human rights.

Several teams across the University, including the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion team, the Disability Staff Network, the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, the University of Southampton Student Union (SUSU), the Wessex Institute and the Festival team at the Public Engagement with Research unit (PERu), have come together to create a month of events to enjoy from the safety of your home, wherever you are in the world.

About the image accompanying #UoSDHM

The image 'It has always been there' embedded in the yellow and black banners (and social media assets) for #UoSDHM was created by Wu Shao-Ning, MA Textile Design student at Winchester School of Art:

"I was inspired by talks around disability and sexuality, in which people brought up the word "reveal", that people react to the topic as if disabled people having desire is "discovered". The narration is problematic as it normalizes the idea of hiding or the non-existence of a very natural human need in the disability community. Through the illustration, I would like to convey the message that, being human, the desire for love and relationship has been, and has always been there, disabled or not."

Alt-Text for the UoSDHM accompanying image: a black and white drawing of hands on a charcoal background pointing their index finger to a white ribbon that looks like a road. Two hands point to a black label with a purple wheelchair icon, the others hands touch directly the ribbon changing its course with their shape. The purple text in capital letters at the centre of the ribbon says "IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN THERE".
